Universal truth vs. socially constructed: racial formations categorized people into racial categories. Media representation in the public sphere would change/reflect the changes to these racial formations overtime (crosby show universal american family, though portrayed by african-americans). Identity as power; power is not material it is also ideological. Cultural politics may be even more powerful. (e. g. , bible as a weapon: they ideologically form the way we think of the world, in the wrong hands becomes a weapon of control). Gender relations are another way to think about identity. Racial theory and gender theory intercept in many ways. Debates about post-industrialism seldom considered women it only asked questions about how men did things. Writing people back into stories of achievement; history of women"s achievement in science and technology were recovered. Once women made it into these structures, gender relations moved onto more of gender politics. Gendered techno-science: pipes, wall outlets and plugs, usb ports (m/f), joysticks all have references to gender.
