CRIM 104 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Restorative Justice, Critical Criminology
Document Summary
Victim-offender mediation (vom) is a process that provides interested victims (primarily those of property crimes and minor assaults) the opportunity to meet their offenders in a safe and structured setting. Peacemaking circles are structured programs that help to build better understanding, create and strengthen bonds and solve community issues. Allows for healthy conversation for victim, offender and community to work through issues in a productive manner. Peacemaking circles can be used in small communities, school environments, family, and especially juvenile and criminal corrections. A family group conference is a process led by family members to plan and make decisions for a child who is at risk. Children and young people are normally involved in their own family group conference, although often with support from an advocate. Restorative justice came into fruition from a multitude of forces. There was a lack of and growing discontent with the criminal justice system.
