The old feudal ways of live was disappearing due to industrial revolution. Resulted impoverished working class surplus of working class. The working class being dependent on the capitalist class who control the machines, factories and raw materials. Simmel, bondger, vold, turk, chamblis, quinney, platt, taylor, walton, young. Historical materialism is a theory that privileges the economic in explanation of non-economic phenomena. Ideology is determined by all other factors not the way around. Mode of production determines how the rest of society is structured. Justice for the rich, jail for the poor. Born 1858, 10 years after parisian revolution of 1848; 12 years before the franco- prussian. Time of industrial revolution, and rise of socialism and communism. Argued that moral order more fundamental than economic order.
