Criminology 131: chapter 2: the structure and process of criminal justice. Criminology: the scientific study of crime and criminal behavior. Criminal justice: the study of social control and the agencies that are involved in the apprehension, prosecution, defence, sentencing, incarceration, and supervision of those suspected or charged with or convicted of criminal offences. Criminology and criminal justice share the commonalities of studying law and legislation, the study of crime trends and patterns, and the formulation and application of criminal law. Research tend to focus on the decision making of personnel at various stages of the criminal justice process in the study of the criminal justice system. Less attention is given to criminal justice agencies as organizations. Failure of sharing info can have consequences for victims, offenders and the community: lack of information in applications for conditional release or parole can all have detrimental consequences.
