There are two models of statutory interpretation: one derives from british traditions. Interpreted literally where phrases and clauses are closely examined in order to extract their precise meanings. The law"s intent has been formulated within the language of the statute. No need to go beyond the wording: one derives from european and u. s. traditions. In order to determine the full intent of the legislature, any source that may assist in determining intent may be consulted. Parliamentary or legislative debates, commission reports and the statements of those responsible can be consulted. Statutory interpretation is often aided by definition sections. Definitions are intended to limit ambiguity from the outset and to lessen the need for legal debate. Federal and provincial interpretation acts apply to all statutes: they contain definitions of certain words with general rules to be employed in the reading of the statutes. Use of male gender within legislation is always read as including the female gender.
