Chicago school members w. i. thomas and george herbert mead were the founders of the symbolic interactionist perspective. Meaning and reality are constructed through social interaction through sharing or communication of symbols that take on a signi cance of their own. Human behaviour is shaped by the de nitions , meanings or identities that individuals and groups acquire through process of social interaction. The ford exploder (they breakdown all the time) and the ford pinto (the gas tank is in the rear of the car and if someone hits you in the rear your car blows up). Realism (associated with quantitative research) accepts certain behaviours as givens. Constructionism (associated with qualitative research) argues that reality is socially constructed. Qualitative (inductive) researchers argue against generating theories that can then be turned into a hypothesis that can then be tested scienti cally.
