Whether r/s b/w 2 variables is causal, not due to third variable. Before getting to validity of measures, there are number of things to cover first. Need to understand how measure relates to conceptual entity wished to study/put the other way around. How do we start with a research topic, develop a research question, define in the included constructs, and operationalize measures of those constructs? . Good research question makes construct easy to define. B/c measurement is difficult & imprecise, researchers must try to describe measurement process explicitly. Words/symbols used to represent these mental images. E. g. aggression, punishment, chivalry, fear, delinquency, etc. Direct observables things/qualities we can observe directly. Require more subtle, complex/indirect observations for things that cannot be observed directly. Specifying precisely what is meant when using particular terms.
