Crim 220 - lecture 6 - quasi-experimental & non-experimental designs. Chapters 1, 2, 4, 5, 6 (only first sections), 7. Need 2 research questions, one for each design. Literature review - answer question what is known about this? . Try not to use why in research questions. Means on average of case, random assignment can result in groups being radically diff. W/ respect to things that may be relevant to iv & dv. Iv not manipulated, and/or subjects not randomly assigned. Comparison groups not equivalent to experimental/treatment groups. The two groups should be comparable in terms of variables likely to be related to the dependent variable (pg 185) First 3 known to be correlated w/ juv & adult arrest rates. Studies done w/ people who had something happen to them. Released ncrmd (ngri) patients later offending. 18% of abused parents (9/49) had abused children vs. 0. 5% (1/206) for unabused parents.
