Purpose of this chapter: think of ways to move from vague ideas to concreate ideas, develop ideas that can be measured in the real world. Communicating your ideas at every step of the research process. Developing precise definitions for the important terms being used. Goal: construct valid and reliable measures that we can apply to some empirical reality. From our vague sense of what a term means to specific measurements: Our subjective thoughts, or mental images, about things that we encounter in our daily life. Note: conceptions are subjective and we cannot directly reveal what"s written on our mental images. Therefore, we use terms, symbols of language, and our observations that relate to a conception to communicate our conceptions. Q: when i say the word terrorist, what image comes to mind: concepts: The words or symbols that represent and share our mental images. Derived from our mental images (conceptions), which summarize our collection of seemingly related observations.
