Highly personal practices that make little or no rational sense and serve no purpose other than allowing you to feel like you can sit down and write. Get to know your rituals and give in to them. Big mistake is that one draft and perhaps at most a mini-edit are all it should take to produce a decent paper: this creates huge pressure, unrealistic expectations. You must get real and understand that the paper is more complex in terms of the ides being knocked around than was the case in high school. Must then realize that there is a sampling problem: you don"t see what it took to get to a final product, all you see is a final product. Say what you need with as much economy as possible: make every word count. No one right way to do a paper.
