Criminology 220: chapter 11: text, image, audio, and video: making sense of non-numeric data. Once a researcher has completed the process of observation and/or data collection the next task is to make sense of the info collected. Involves taking it apart, understanding its components and coming to some determination of the underlying patterns and meanings. Underlying goal of all analyses is the reduction of data into a form we can use to answer our research questions and or make particular arguments. Making sense of non numeric data is often presented as the product of some form of revelation as opposed to the learning of a particular set of analytical techniques. Published qualitative analyses are often criticized for lacking transcparency with authros rarely making the data analysis process explicit or systematic. The unstructured nature of non numeric data presents a challenge when it comes to detailing techniques of analysis.
