Looked at many characteristics such as height, weight, skin colour, etc. Studied ppl & gor normal distribution for each of characteristics & then took median. Divided each characteristic into median, very much below median, below median, above median, very much above median. Alphonse bertillon - joined surete as clerk recording descriptions of criminals & eventually became chief of identification section.
