Eugene vidocq, former criminal who became private detective & was named first chief of. Surete nationale in 1811, made men memorize face of criminals so they would recognize them if they saw them again. Only way of knowing if someone had criminal record/had been questioned before. Louis bertillon - developed system called seriation to describe populations. Looked at many characteristics such as height, weight, skin colour, etc. Studied ppl & gor normal distribution for each of characteristics & then took median. Divided each characteristic into median, very much below median, below median, above median, very much above median. Alphonse bertillon - joined surete as clerk recording descriptions of criminals & eventually became chief of identification section.
