Crim 355 - lecture 11 - forensic tool mark and firearms examinations. Training involved in tool mark and firearm examination. Tool mark & firearm examinations - performed by same scientists so qualifications & training are same. Preliminary qualifications - usually minimum of honours bsc in engineering/physics, although training in other sciences may be accepted. Applicants must have strong mechanical aptitude & logical, analytical minds. Once in lab, undergo two-year understudy period under senior tool mark/firearms examiner. Firearm & tool mark examiner provides general types of examinations. Examine any sort of tool mark or firearm and/or ammunition. Physical matching usually involves firearms/tool marks, but can also include physically matching glass from hit & run/broken scissors or knife tips in wound/suspect weapon/pipe cut by hacksaw. Firearm & tool mark examiners may also be involved w/ restoring serial number/other obliterated marks using certain techniques. Numbers usually obliterated from firearms, but may also be on jewelry, stereos, cars, bikes, guitar plates.
