Document Summary
Irene red eld: married to brian, a black doctor with two sons. Clare kendry: married to jack bellew, a white man with one daughter. She is married to a man who does not know she is actually black, passing as white. Clare and irene share physical similarities and are childhood friends, but they have different life trajectories. They are both middle class women, who have known each other since childhood, but while these two gures look like doubles (dopplegangers), this underscores the difference between their motivations and morals. Irene is invested in being a proper mother and a proper wife, who is unsel sh, respected and moral. Clare is sel sh and acts on her own needs, she even states that being a mother is a laughable matter, one opinion to which irene disagrees with. The story plays with the idea of gender and sexuality.
