Eng 105 march 17 paper shadows. Emphasized the importance of stories, memories, love creating family. All families have interesting histories no one is just irish or just english (connects to a bird in the house) Returns to sites of his childhood, especially his school. Fleeting images of chinese opera throughout the film: to reflect how we remember, how memories work, some things stick out & are just there, it threads throughout the whole film. Throughout canada, chinese were restricted to live in chinatowns : chinatown was seen as dangerous but for the chinese it was a place where they felt safe & belonged. Gave them a sense of community: the dangerous reputation chinatown has feeds what the white people think of them. Ww2 created more fear towards the chinese (20-24), but in the end they used them to help with the war as undercover soldiers.
