Salmon are an indicator species, because they are sensitive to environmental perturbation (e. g. low dissolved oxygen). Salmon are also a keystone species because they are important determinants of regional biodiversity, and many other species depend on them. Salmon populations have been in decline: some salmon species have been extirpated in the southern part of their range or exist in numbers considerably lower than historic levels.
