Vocabulary Assignment #2
(1) Circle Guidelines:
The circle talk is an Indigenous pedagogy, which is non judgmental. A set of basic rules are
implemented to protect this scared process, and each individual that is participating in the circle is
expected to respect these rules. For instance, the topics that are going to be discussed will be stated
clearly. Another critical guideline is confidentiality, and also each individual should only speak
about their own experience.
(2) American Progress Painting:
Is a painting created by John Gast in 1872. This painting depicts the moving of settlers from the
East to the West, and reflects on the idea that the West needed to be civilized. It shows the East as
bright with a lot of technology such as trains, telegraph wires, boats, and so forth. In contrast, the
West is portrayed as dark and violent. In addition, this painting displays colonization and how
settlers destroyed the culture and traditions of First Peoples due to the ideas of manifest destiny, and
the development of the West.
(3) Unsettling Settler:
Is the recognition of the detrimental impact of settler colonialism on Aboriginal individuals. In
other words, it is the acknowledgment of non-Aboriginal individuals in regards the wounds and
pain of Aboriginal people, that were solely caused by colonialism. It is understanding the failures of
the past and not denying them. Also, it is accepting our mistakes and realizing that the society
devalued and ignored Indigenous experience.
(4) Perfect Stranger:
Is a stance pointed out by Susan Dion. It demonstrates the current lack of knowledge and
understanding about Indigenous culture and traditions among educators. The perfect stranger stance
is prevalent due to stereotypes and preconceptions of Aboriginal individuals. Unfortunately, this
position is not only common among educators but also among many Canadians.
(5) Two-eyed seeing:
Is a view that implies merging the strengths of both Indigenous and civilized world together, and
thus seeing it simultaneously. Having this view implies reciprocity and benets everyone within the
society.
