women. Basic rights began to be fought for.
The Enlightenment
- Philosophical and political set of ideas. Critique both church and monarchy
- Base arguments on historical, sociological and scientific reason not theology/religion
- Belief in the potential of human reason to gain a fuller understanding of the world.
- Freedom of speech and religion.
Early Feminists
- Both women and men
- Advocated greater equality for women in: public institutions, family and household, important plae of oes
education, general equality of the sexes, right for women to remain single, have sexual relations and children.
Influences
- Europe and N.A- major social, intellectual, political and economic changes.
- Increasing literacy created more access to information for working and middle class people.
- Challenge of the Enlightment

Economic changes
- Industrial revolution (1760-1840), family labour replaced by waged labour, expansion of consumer goods.
- Home re-invented as place of childcare, consumption and leisure not production.
- Women at home= status symbol for middle class.
