Why (film) stars: we get pleasure from them but they are also a tool, a commodity. The star treatment: stars symbolic figures; interest in how identities constructed from all textual materials. Includes all images, performances and written materials about public and personal life: star studies scholars view stars texts, meaning, images and culture, stars actively feed into their star image". Dyer"s star theory: star as a construction, star as a commodity, star as an ideaology, star as a construction. Stars as social types: stars positioned as social types. Ideology defined as: consciousness-shaping, naturalizes inequalities through language (discourse) and images. She really played up the over sexualized: the dumb role made people think that she didn"t know better, she was being controlled. Monroe as idealized white (female) star: monroe more than a sex symbol, but a white one, monroe"s stardom reinforced notion of whiteness as mythic norm, her sexy yet childlike femininity not accessible to all women.
