By 1980"s that difference became more pronounced and apparent that western european countries gb, france, netherlands, etc. Were much better off than their eastern counterparts. Peripheral zone in southern europe italy (western camp, part of their alliance after ww2 and things improved their in terms of economic growth and living standards) But other countries like greek, spain and portugal fell somewhere in the middle. Not dirt poor by global standards but not as well of as places like italy. Not following general patterns seen elsewhere in europe. Even in the relatively poor countries in eastern europe standards of living were increasing in places like bulgaria, esp compared to before. Economic growth wasn"t as dramatic in eastern europe as it was in western. Everyone was living much better than their parents or grandparents.
