Crop failure/famine = demand for food beyond the capacity of the ecosystem. Scarcity of resources promotes shift in demographic trajectory. Period of growth = period of population increase. Period of stasis = period of stabilized population size. Stds: chlamydia trachomatis widespread and affects fertility. Splitting up land among offspring = smaller plots. Small plots support less people - families will get smaller. Need to supplement income = send children to work (dekasegi) in other villages or towns and cities. Less peasants = decline in tax base. 1642 edicts: no work outside of villages. Should be no high and low among peasants. Depends on who you are, where you are, wealth, etc. Smaller, less arable parcels of land = more labour for less reward. Commercialization and wage labour widespread = contractual relationships, less personal. Limited demand of what you can expect from a person. Fewer support systems in the form of protective relatives, neighbours and leaders.
