Difficult to diagnose mental health, accurate diagnosis is important bc can treat/approach better. Mental health problems - common, everyone has them, day to day stresses. Diminished capacities, cognitive, emotional, attentional, interpersonal, motivational, behavioural, that interfere with a person"s enjoyment of life, they are temporary. Mental disorders - disables a person in regard to day to day functioning. Clinically significant pattern of behavioural and emotional functioning associated with distress, suffering, or impairment in or more areas of functioning (school, family, etc) lifetime prevalence is ~ 50% Use internationally and addresses all types of illness. Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders. Addresses psychiatric disorders but no other illnesses and is used exclusively in n. Dsm-v has been very controversial in introducing new illnesses. Medication is given to put them to sleep. Have had a seizure, but no convulsion. Given to people as a treatment for depression. Quite effective for those with severe depression.
