HSCI 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Major Trauma, Melanin, Dermis
Document Summary
Skin, accessory glands (hair follicles, nails, oil/sweat glands) Skin has 2 main regions; epidermis & dermis. Beneath skin is subcutaneous layer b/w dermis & internal structures where fat is stored. Functions: protection from physical trauma, pathogens, water loss, regulates body temperature, sensory receptors for environmental awareness, synthesizes chemicals such as melanin and vitamin d. Cells in the uppermost cells are dead & become illed with keratin thus acting as a waterproof barrier. Langerhans cells are a type of wbc (macrophage) that help ight pathogens. Melanocytes produce melanin that lend to skin color & uv protection. Contains blood vessels which provide nutrients, many sensory receptors (nerves), and glands. Ability to maintain a stable, constant internal environment in the body.
