Document Summary
Genes- segment of dna located on a region of a chromosome that encodes the information for producing a particular protein. Alleles- alternative form of a gene located on a specific site of a chromosome; 1 allele is inherited from the mother & father. Homologous pair of chromosomes- each member carries genes for the same traits; one member of each pair inherited from father & mother. Polymorphism- also use to indicate different versions of genes or variation in dna. Genotype- specific alleles related to a particular trait (or set of traits) = phenotype. Homozygous individuals with 2 copies of same allele. Heterozygous individuals with 2 different alleles of a given gene. Dominant allele will be expressed & will mask a recessive gene. Recessive allele allele that is only expressed when an organism has 2 of this type of allele (tt) Gregor mendel: studied how single genes are inherited from parent to offspring, first used one-trait crosses, then used 2-trait (dihybrid) crosses.
