HSCI 160 Lecture 8: The Environment and Health
Document Summary
Contributors to global burden of disease: unsafe water, hygiene, excreta disposal, urban air pollution. Indoor smoke form household use of solid fuels. Leading causes of death linked to environmental factors: Physical, chemical, microbiological exposures and processes (beyond our control) Environmental health: set of public health efforts that is concerned w/ preventing disease, death and disability by reducing exposure to adverse environmental conditions and promoting behavior change. Factors: understand factors (direct/indirect causes of disease or injury, reduce exposure to factors, prevent death/disease/disability in result of the factors, use resources inside/outside of healthcare system to help improve health outcomes. Household: unsafe water, poor sanitation, waste disposal, crowded housing and poor ventilation, toxic substances. Type of house, resources in home, bed?, storage space or food etc. Community: poor water resource management, vehicle and industrial air pollution. Living near highways -> higher risk of disease (pollution) Unsafe water, inadequate sanitation and solid waste disposal, improper hygiene. Exposure to vehicle emissions and industrial air pollution.
