HSCI 160 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Micronutrient, Vitamin A, Stillbirth
Document Summary
Nutritional status has a profound impact on and relationship with health status. Fundamental to growth of young children, their mental, physical development and health as adults. Malnutrition: those who do not get proper nutrition (too much, too little, or of the wrong kind) Undernourished: people who lack sufficient energy and nutrients. Causes: inadequate dietary intake (weakens the body: opens the person to illness and infection) and illness (makes it harder for people to eat and absorb what they takin in) Underlying causes: inadequate access to food, health services, environment, care for children and women. Growth charts (height vs weight at certain age) Very important: four micronutrients: vitamin a, iron, iodine, zinc. Undernutrition (unicef): the outcome of insufficient food intake (hunger) and repeated infectious diseases; includes being underweight, too short, dangerously thin (compared to height), for one s age and deficient in vitamins and minerals (micronutrient malnutrition) Stunting: height for age that is below minus 2 standard deviations of the median.
