HSCI 180 Lecture 3: Chapter 5
Document Summary
Hsci 180- drugs & society chapter 5: the action of drugs. Most drugs come from plants or chemically derived from plants. Drug action: interaction of drug with its receptor (recognition proteins that respond to specific chemical signals) Drug effects: resulting behavioural cognitive and emotional changes that are produced following drug action. Nonspecific effects: derive form users unique background, expectations, perceptions and environment. Specific effects: depend on the presence of a chemical at certain concentrations. Placebo effects: are those produced by an inactive chemical that the user believes to be a drug (placebos could be used in programs for treatment of drug addiction) *especially important in treating pain and psychological depression. Double blind experiments: patient & doctor are blind to experiment. Dose- response curve: shows size of response relative to amount of drug administered; different systems/ effects have different response thresholds. (legal limit: 0. 05% slowed reaction time) Ataxia: losing ability to balance yourself when drinking.
