Overview of injuries and disabilities: disability always happens in a context, the leading causes of injury and disability may change over years, over the past 20 years the number have changed but the percentages have stayed the same. Injury (who): damage to the body caused by acute exposure to physical agents exp. mechanical energy, heat, electricity, chemicals and ionizing radiation. Major causes: traf c collisions, drowning, poisoning, falls, burns, violence from assault, self in icted violence or acts of war. Unintentional injuries: road traf c injuries, poisoning, falls, res, drowning, other unintentional injuries (exp. exposure to electric current, radiation, forces of nature/natural disaster, etc) Low-middle income country: higher deaths by injury, can assume from the percentages that road systems or law systems are not as good as developed countries. High income country: can assume from the percentages there are relatively good road systems.
