The first four books of the odyssey are often called the telemachy because they are about odysseus" son, telemachus. The reader/audience first meets odysseus in book 5, on the island of calypso: the island is an oasis of immortality, but odysseus chooses to leave, odysseus chooses mortality over immortality and his wife penelope over the goddess calypso.
