The basic terminology that we need to get clear in order to start our study of logic involves the following terms: Some strings of letters are meaningless, others form words. Statements- canada wins most gold medals in curling at the olympic games. A statement is a sentence (or part of a sentence) that expresses something that is true or false. Or, a statement is a sentence (or part of a sentence) that states a fact. *note: a wish can be considered a statement (ex: i wish it were cooler outside) For statements only, one can ask: did that person tell something false (or perhaps lied?) So, all statements are sentences, but not all sentences are statements. Note: even if a sentence isn"t a statement, it may contain one.
