PHIL 120W Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Economic Justice, Moral Luck
Document Summary
L e c t u r e 1: m o r a l l u c k. Cynthia is driving home down a residential street in the autumn. She sees a very large pile of leaves on the street on the street, and drives through the pile of leaves. Cynthia hit and killed two children with her car while driving home, but a few hours passed before she realized what she had done. She and her brother only connected the dots when they learned about the deaths in the news reports. The children had been hiding in the pile of leaves, and cynthia drove over the children while intended to drive over the pile of leaves. As a result, the father and the daughter both died. We should not be blamed/praised for things beyond our control. Kant believed that good/bad luck should influence neither our moral judgment of a person and his actions, nor his moral assessment of himself .
