Phys 101 Written Problems #9
Due: Wed, Nov 22, 2017 at 4 PM. Put finished assignment in P101 drop box on 9000 level of Physics
(put into the box that has your tutorial section number as a label).
Please note to get full credit for any written homework assignment you must:
1) Put the assignment name, your full name, your student number, your tutorial section number
(see Canvas for tutorial sections), and TA first name (-1 mark if not done correctly) :
PHYS 101 Homework #1, Susie Smith, 123456789, D102, Tim
2) Show all of your work, clearly and legibly. Use diagrams if necessary.
3) Try to work out answers symbolically. Only put #s in at the end.
4) Put a box around your answers.
5) Don’t forget units.
6) If you use more than one page, staple all of the pages together (-1 mark for unstapled
assignments)
Problem 1:
You are practicing for an ocean kayak expedition in a local pool. You, your kayak, and a backpack of
supplies that you have stored in the front of the kayak are floating in the pool. You have a mass of 60 kg,
your kayak is 20 kg and your backpack that has a volume of 20 litres is stuffed full of supplies and has a
mass of 30 kg.
a) What volume of water do you, your kayak and bag of supplies displace while floating? (1 mark)
b) Given your backpack’s volume and mass, would it float in water? (1 mark)
c) You do a roll and return to the upright position. During the roll your backpack fell out and went into
the pool. What happens to the level of water in the pool? does it go up, down or stay the same? Why?
(2 marks)
Problem 2:
You need to syphon water from a clogged sink. The sink has an area of 0.4 m2.
The syphon has a diameter of 2.5 cm. All other dimensions are given in the
diagram. Ignore viscosity.
a) Assuming the water level in the sink has essentially zero velocity
because its area is so much bigger than the hose in the syphon, use Bernouli’s
equation to calculate the velocity of the water as it enters the pail. (1 mark)
b) How long will it take to empty the sink of water? (2 marks)
