The remaining 5/6 have a per capita income less than half that of canada. The political problems that many third world countries face are not all of their own making. To a considerable extent, they are a product of a history of domination and exploitation. The control and colonization of most of the world by the european powers often left third. World countries ill-prepared for governing after becoming independent. The cold war, and more recently concerns about international terrorism, have kept powerful countries intervening in the politics of the third world. Now political and social elements are considered. Development is more than just how much a country earns, but also security and freedom, laws and openness in society. Ldcs are often referred to with other terms.
