Pippa norris distinguish between 3 basic type of campaigns: Pre-modern campaign - involved considerable personal contact with voters and campaigning was largely localized. Modern campaign - rely on opinion polling, professional consultants, and tv advertising. Postmodern campaigns uses new forms of communication, focus groups, online content. Parties carry their message to the public through media coverage and advertising. However, parties do not always clearly state their views on major issues and will avoid antagonizing voters by making vague statements. Negative and misleading advertising is a key of election campaigns. A political party is an organization that has a central role in the competition for political power in legislative bodies and in governing. Political parties serve 4 main purposes: they provide a link between the rulers and the ruled, they mobilize the masses, they structure the political world, they recruit and socialize the political elites.
