Plato republic ethically guiding and important to how a state should be organized. Background: political economy, athens/greece: cradle of civilization during the context of plato. Athens was the most sophisticated of the city states and innovative. It was often thought to be culturally, intellectually competitive among other city states. If you have a large class of individuals that lack suffrage, how democratic are you: trade, forming, peasant, artisans, source of active and ongoing political instability. Important share of economic growth denied to a class of individuals: 30,000 citizens (active governing in the say of athens) while there were up to 300,000 persons. [we think of justice as social justice in contemporary context. Justice back then was connected to such notions of solidarity, the kinds of things as a an organizing principle that keeps people together. ] [the preoccupation of thinking about just in the city, because it was a site of human flourishing.
