Continuity and change in southeast east asian studies. The subject of southeast asia"s originates as a distinct field that is commonly traced, forty years ago, to the creation of the military south east asia command during world. So shallow a genealogy only emphasized the field"s insecurity, threatening it with absorption into more established academic empires. The emphasis on the newness of southeast asian studies was, it seems to me, the coincidence between southeast asia"s birth as a concept and the triumph of american world power. World war ii was important not for the bureaucratic detail of the southeast asia. But for the fact that the japanese occupied the region, creating an abrupt break with the era of european domination and making it an object of american attention. At last be allowed to realize their true identity by creating independent nation- states which would be free to travel the road to modernity.
