PSYC 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Tendon Reflex, Classical Conditioning, Contiguity
Document Summary
Learning: relatively long lasting durable change in behavior that is due to experience. Classical conditioning: type of leaning in which a neutral stimulus acquires the ability to evoke a response that was originally evoked by another stimulus. Ivan pavlov: looking at various kinds of conditions that lead to learning, discovered accidently by pavlov when studying the role that salivation plays in digestion in animals. During conditioning: pair the neutral stimulus with the presentation of the unconditioned stimulus, after it has been done over and over such that the neutral stimulus becomes not neutral. Example: dentist: ucs (discomfort/pain) ucr (anxiety/fear, neutral stimulus (sound/sight of drill) Example: nausea in cancer patients: ucs (drug) ucr (nausea, ns (waiting room, waiting room induces nausea. Acquisition: formation of a new conditioned response tendency. Extinction: gradual weakening and disappearance of a conditioned response tendency. Spontaneous recovery: reappearance of an extinguished response after a period of non-exposure to a cs.
