PSYC 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Delta Wave, Non-Rapid Eye Movement Sleep, Sleep Spindle
Document Summary
Consciousness personal awareness of internal and external stimuli. Controlled process require alert awareness, absorb limited attention, and interfere with other ongoing activities. Automatic processes occur with little conscious awareness, require minimal attention, and do not interfere with other activities. Excited (more densed) to deep sleep (more scattered) 24-hour biological cycle found in humans and other species. Light receptors in brain, cells in retina send signals to scn. Increase of alpha waves replacing beta waves. High frequency of brain waves occurs with low frequency. Some kind of blockage of sound occurring in thalamus. 50% of delta waves during stage 4 sleep. As night progresses, we spend more time on lighter stage of sleep and rem sleep. Sudden and irresistible onsets of sleep during normal waking periods. Frequent, reflexive gasping for air that awakens a person and disrupts sleep. Abrupt awakening from nrem sleep accompanied by intense ans arousal and panic. Person arises and wanders around while remaining asleep.
