PSYC 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Jane Goodall, Naturalistic Observation, Random Assignment
Document Summary
Premise that knowledge is acquired through observaion. Assumes that events are governed by some form of lawful order. Constructs: self-report measures- asking people, reports by others- experts, parents of children, behavioural observaions- checklist, physiological measures- some behaviours are associated with certain physiological responses, understanding & predicion. Variable: any measurable condiion, event, characterisic, or behaviour that is manipulated, controlled or observed: applicaion & control. Inferenial staisics: report findings of research a. Two basic research strategies: experimental method, experiment- research method in which the invesigator manipulates a variable under controlled condiions & observes whether there are changes in a second variable as well. Independent variable- the experimenter has ability to control; free to be varied by the experiment; a condiion or event that an experimenter varies in order to assess its impact on another variable. Dependent variable- variable that is believed to be afected by the manipulaion of the independent variable. Receives speciic treatment related to the independent variable.
