Document Summary

The central nervous system has two components: brain & spinal cord: spinal cord is a bridge between the brain and parts of the body below the neck, spinal nerves are part of the peripheral nervous system. 31 pairs, each connected the spinal cord and pertain to a specific body area. These nerves are protected by the hard spinal column. The nerves are made out of sensory and motor fibres: spinal reflexes are enabled by spinal nerves. Touch a hot stove ouch pull hand back, no need to take time to route through brain. Involuntary responses: goes to the glands, blood vessels and organs, digestion, elimination, heart rate, salivation, perspiration, breathing, sexual arousal. Somatic nervous system: voluntary responses, moving your arms, speaking, working out etc, goes to the skin, joints, and muscles. Nerves are like cables and are part of the peripheral nervous system. 3 types of nerves: afferent, efferent, and also a mixed nerve (that we didn"t talk about).
