PSYC 102 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, Primitive Reflexes, Prenatal Development
Document Summary
Study of coninuity and change across the life span: infancy, childhood, adolescence, adulthood. Zygote: a ferilized egg that contains chromosomes from both an egg and a sperm. There are three prenatal stages (from concepion to birth: germinal stage: 2-week period that begins at concepion. The one-celled zygote divides into two cells, then into 4 and so on. It travels down the fallopian tube and implants itself on the wall of the uterus. However, half of the zygotes don"t make it: embryonic stage: period that lasts from the 2nd week unil about the 8th week. Embryo coninues to divide and its cells begin to difereniate: fetal stage: period that lasts from the 9th week unil birth. Myelinaion: formaion of a faty sheath around the axons of a neuron. Contrary to what many people think, ferilizaion does not happen right away. It typically happens 1 to 2 days ater intercourse, but can happen as much as 5 days later.
