PSYC 102 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Testis Determining Factor, Information Processing, Egocentrism
Document Summary
Developmental psychology examines changes in our biological, physical, psychological, and behavioural processes as we age: nature nurture, critical and sensitive periods. Critical: age range in which certain experiences must occur for development to proceed normally. Sensitive: optimal age range for certain experiences, if doesn"t happen, normal development will still be possible: continuity vs discontinuity, stability versus change. Longitudinal: test one person every 10 years. Sequential: test several people as they grow older. Fetus: 9th week after conception: muscles become stronger, other bodily systems develop. Mother"s egg cell is always x 23rd chromosome. Father"s 23rd chromosome if x results baby girl, if y baby boy. Tdf (testis determining factor) gene is the last y chromosome. Teratogens: environmental agents that cause abnormal prenatal development. Behavioural responses and learning begin during the fetal stage. Cephalocaudal principle: tendency for development to proceed in a head to toe direction. Proximodistal principle: development beings along the innermost parts then toward outermost part.
