Language: the sole sign and only certain mark of thought hidden and wrapped up in the body . Phonemes: the smallest unit of sound in any given language. The sounds that the letters of the alphabet make, essentially. Morphemes: the smallest units of meaning in language. Some can stand alone in content morphemes, function morphemes eg: ed to signify the past. Syntax: system of rules that specify how workds can be combined into phrases and sentences (grammar). 3 months: smiles when talked to; makes cooing sounds. 4 months: turn head in response to human voice. 5 months: makes vowel and consonant sounds while coing. 1 year: understands few words, may say some. 1. 5 years: has vocab of up to 50 words. 2 years: vocab now uses 2 word phrases.
