PSYC 106 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Moral Panic, Smartphone, Norm (Social)
Document Summary
Live lecture - focus on relationships, mental health, and interaction. Phubbing = snubbing a co-present communication partner by giving the phone. Idea where you snub someone using your phone instead of talking to the more attention (roberts and david, 2016) person directly. You are in a social situation but you"re paying attn to your phone and ignoring your companion. Social norms: being phubbed and being a phubber - increases chances of the behaviour being a social norm. The more dependent the more one tends to phub (even children) Reduction in empathy in face to face interactions when phone is also present. Lower levels of relationship quality, partner trust. Technoference = the interference of technology in a relationship. Study: women who reported more technoference in their relationships also reported more conflict over tech use, lower relationship satisfaction, more depression symptoms, lower life satisfaction. Uses and gratification theory = socio-emotional developmental context (eg presentation of self, making friends, identity)
