PSYC 106 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Virtual Reality Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Exposure Therapy
Document Summary
Exposure therapy: an exposure therapy client with obsessive-compulsive disorder who fears contamination in public restrooms might be given homework to visit three such restrooms in a week, touch the toilets, and then not wash up. Sometimes, exposure to the feared situation is too anxiety-provoking or impractical. Beginning with a tiny reminder of the feared situation, keep increasing the exposure intensity as the person learns to tolerate the previous level. This involves exposure to simulations, such as flying (below) or snakes. Cognitive and cognitive behavioral therapy: cognitive therapy: involves helping a client identify and correct any distorted thinking about self, others, or the world. Cognitive restructuring: therapeutic approach that teaches clients to question the automatic beliefs, assumptions, and predictions that often lead to negative thinking with more realistic and positive beliefs. Cognitive therapy helps people alter the negative thinking that worsens depression and anxiety.
