Major depressed mood or loss of interest or pleasure (anhedonia) Needs to be present for a minimum period of time. Onset- may begin at any age; average age at onset is mid-20"s. Depressed mood more often than not for more than 2 years (1 year for children/ adolescents) Plus two of the following: poor appetite or overeating, sleep problems, low energy, low self-esteem, trouble concentrating or making decisions, hopelessness. The person has never been without the symptoms for more than 2 months at a time. In most menstrual cycles during the past year, at least five of the following symptoms were present in the final week before menses and improved within a few of menses onset: Changes in appetite, overeating, or food craving. Subjective sense of being overwhelmed or out of control. Physical symptoms such as breast tenderness or swelling, joint or muscle pain, or bloating.
