In-group favoritism: the general tendency to favor our own group over others. 1. formal prejudice decreased a lot over the past several decades: need more recent studies, seems to have an uptick in explicit prejudice, prejudice is still alive. Prejudice: affective/ emotional component, +/-ve, negative attitudes directed at a group because of membership in that group. Discrimination: behaviour, unjustified -ve, harmful action toward a member of a group, based solely on the group. Social identity benefits: who strongly identify with a gp is more likely to favour own gp. Self-esteem benefits: gives ppl self-esteem boosts if they believe their gp is superior. Aboriginal: reduce prejudice, reverse stereotypical beliefs: i. Dovidio: show white p videotape of black experiencing discrimination, pay attention to their feeling/ thoughts. 3: did not affect symbolic beliefs/ stereotype but emotional feeling: more willing to engage in future contact with black ppl.
