Rights of ofenders: rights of ofenders were eventually recognized in the 1970s giving prison life a more human face. Long-ime forms of punishments, such as whipping and lashing were eliminated. The idea of rehabilitaion: it is the key object of canada"s correcion system to make criminals more funcional in society. But criminal code changes makes rehabilitaion programs less accessible. Reasons: expressive purpose: convey a message to the public that a paricular behavior is wrong. This includes speciic deterrence, individuals are sentenced and incapacitaion. The other one is general deterrence, to prevent crime by insilling fear of punishment among the general public. Fourth reason is for rehabilitaion, prevent crime by changing the individual. Sentencing opions frequently used opion, 45%, probaion, imprisonment, dangerous and long-term ofender one is in jail/prison as long as they are deemed dangerous. : absolute discharge, condiional discharge, ines and community service most. Change in criminal code: give a minimum mandatory sentence for certain ofences.
