PSYC 280 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Connectionism, Single-Nucleotide Polymorphism
Document Summary
Psyc 280 - lecture 1 - introduction & evolution. Draws source info from diverse range of other research fields. In order to understand r/s b/w mind & body, program of rigorous research required to avoid drawing unwarranted conclusions as otherwise prone to do. Manipulating variables & controlled experiments allow researchers to make stronger claims about causal relationships than in correlated studies. Biological psychology interested in all 3 techniques since combo gives us more robust explanation of r/s b/w mind & body. Another important principle - there are multiple diff levels of physical analysis relevant to our understanding of mind. From molecular to cellular, organs to circuits, social & ecological. Dynamics at each level influences dynamic of others - sensory, motor, & higher cognitive processes of info travels in between each of levels. Changes/disturbances at one level can be observed in others, making them all part of one continuous process despite appearing at discrete units.
