Brains produced the entire extent of human knowledge, everything we understand about the universe. The brain contains approximately 86 billion nerve cells or neurons. Neuron: also called a nerve cell, the basic unit of the nervous system: each neuron contacts many other cells at points called synapses. Axon: a specialized extension of neurons: microscopically slender yet it may be several feet long, axons produce electrical impulses that travel hundreds of miles per hour. The first people to study the relationships between brain and behavior called themselves philosophers: their findings contributed to the births of biology and psychology. Biological psychology: the study of the biological bases of psychological processes and behavior: relates behavior to bodily processes, especially the brain, biological psychology can also be called biological neuroscience. Neuroscience: the study of the nervous system and brain. The main goal of this field is to understand the biology underlying behavior and experience.
